Applications for National Symphony Orchestra's Summer Music Institute
The Massachusetts Arts Education Committee is proud to accept applications for the National Symphony Orchestra's Summer Music Institute. Please read about the competition and event below. An application form is below.

Every summer, approximately 70 students (ages 15-20) from all over the nation meet in Washington, D.C., to attend the National Symphony Orchestra's Summer Music Institute (SMI). The Institute offers four weeks of private lessons, rehearsals, coaching by National Symphony Orchestra members, classes, and lectures to prepare aspiring musicians for their futures in music
.
Several of the students are graduates or current participants of the NSO Youth Fellowship Program, an orchestral training program for talented young musicians. Also included are students participating in the Young Artists of Color National Training Initiative of the Kennedy Center. In addition to their many lessons and training sessions, the students also perform a series of free Kennedy Center Millennium Stage concerts that are open to the public.

The Summer Music Institute is coordinated by the National Symphony Orchestra Education Program, which is a component of the Kennedy Center Education Department. Young people, teachers, and families take part in innovative and effective education programs initiated by the Center, including performances, lectures, demonstrations, open rehearsals, dance and music residencies, master classes, competitions for young actors and musicians, backstage tours, and workshops. These programs have become models for communities across the country, as educators and government leaders recognize what the Center has known for years: that the arts can unlock the door to learning for young people, fostering creativity, teaching discipline, improving self-esteem, and challenging students to think in new ways, as well as offering them experiences in the joy of the performing arts.
Application deadline February 8, 2008. (program dates: June 30 - July 28, 2008)

NALC and the Mass Alliance for Arts Education
ENALC needs your input to help define future programming and advocacy
activities to promote arts in education across the Commonwealth.
As a result of the merger between NALC and MAAE, made possible through the
support of The Boston Foundation, NALC has formed the Massachusetts Arts
Education Committee to continue the advocacy work of MAAE. Now strategic
planning is underway to position our newly formed MAEC for action in early
2008. The committee, which includes arts in education practitioners and
experts in the field, will hold its first meeting in January.
NALC will become the Massachusetts affiliate of the Kennedy Center's
Alliance for Arts Education Network, and is committed to continuing MAAE's
key programs such as the Champions of Arts Education Awards and National
Symphony Orchestra's National Trustee Fellowship, and expanding arts
education advocacy activities.
The information you provide will help us improve our services and programs.
Based on the feedback we received last year, we developed a conference
attended by over 200 people, newsletters sent to nearly 5000 people, and
programs affecting over 600 children that focused on the topics and services
rated most valuable by those who completed the survey.

Thank you in advance for your support!

annual Joe Val Bluegrass Festival every Presidents Day weekend.

For the past several years we have included a teachers' workshop to help
teachers learn about the music and how to incorporate it into their
classroom teaching. For more information on the BBU, please see our

Wind Ensemble at Central College will be on tour in
Boston this coming May

The Wind Ensemble at Central College will be on tour in Boston this coming May. I'm interested to know if any area high schools would be interested in having us present a free concert for their students on Wednesday, May 14; Thursday, May 15 or Friday, May 16. We would be happy to perform during the school day or in the evening (in the latter case, perhaps a joint concert with the high school ensemble would be possible). We would also be interested and appreciative of a home-stay in the evening with the band members' families.
To learn more about our music program and college in general, I've attached a program from our international tour last May (the jazz ensemble will not be on our Boston tour).
I'd appreciate you sharing this request with the MMEA membership.
Thanks for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Mitchell Lutch
